What to Expect When Coming to Our Clinic
We’re here to support your allied health journey with us. Whether you’re attending for psychology, speech pathology, occupational therapy, or dietetics, there are some common steps to help you feel prepared and confident before your first appointment.
1. Preparing for Your Appointment
After booking your appointment, there are a few things you can do to get ready:
- Complete Your Intake Forms
To help us support you from the very first session, your intake forms can be completed online through a secure link that will be emailed to you after booking. Forms are required at least 72 hours before your appointment—this helps ensure your session runs smoothly and avoids any need to reschedule. Providing this information in advance allows your clinician to understand your needs and goals, so your time together can be focused on what matters most to you. - Referrals (if applicable)
Some services may require a referral, depending on the type of care you need. However, a referral is not always necessary—self-referrals are welcome. Our friendly team is here to guide you and can advise whether a referral is needed for your specific service. If you already have a referral, please ensure it is finalised before your appointment so your clinician has all the information they need to support you
2. Appointment Confirmation and Reminders
Once your appointment is booked, you’ll receive a confirmation email with all the relevant details, including the date, time, location, and your clinician’s name. Appointment reminders are sent prior to your session.
3. What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment is generally an assessment and history-gathering session. This helps your clinician gain a thorough understanding of your needs and how best to support you.
- For adult clients, this session is typically completed directly with you.
- For clients under 18, the appointment is usually completed with a parent or guardian, and may include time with both the child and caregiver, depending on the service and individual needs.
- Your clinician may observe your child’s behaviour and interactions as part of the initial assessment. Some clinicians may engage directly with your child through play or interactive activities, while others may focus on speaking with a parent or guardian. How the session is conducted depends on the clinician’s approach, as well as your child’s comfort and responses. The session is always tailored to your child’s individual needs, ensuring a supportive and personalised experience.
- To help your child feel more comfortable, you may wish to talk to them beforehand about who they will be seeing. You can also show them a photo of your clinician available on our website. At times, a name and a familiar face can be reassuring.
- We encourage everyone to explore the clinic photos on our website—becoming a little familiar with the clinic environment can help reduce anxiety and make the first visit feel more welcoming.
Remember, the appointment is all about you (or your child) and your needs. There’s no need to prepare or act differently—just be yourself. We want you to feel as comfortable and supported as much as possible throughout your session.
4. Ongoing Therapy and Support
Following your initial appointment, your clinician will work with you (and your family or significant others, where appropriate) to develop a tailored, individualised therapy plan that meets your unique needs and supports your personal goals. These plans are flexible and will be reviewed with you regularly to ensure your therapy continues to be effective and aligned with your progress.
5. Communication and Follow-Up
We value open communication and a collaborative approach. You’re welcome to ask questions at any stage, and we’ll regularly review progress to ensure the support you’re receiving continues to meet your needs. Our friendly administrative staff are also always available to answer any queries about appointment scheduling and related matters.
